Callaway, Paul (Smith)
Callaway, Paul (Smith), American organist and conductor; b. Atlanta, 111., Aug. 16, 1909; d. March 21, 1995. After attending Westminster Coll. in Fulton, Mo. (1927–29), he studied organ with Noble in N.Y. (1930–35), with Sowerby in Chicago (1936), and with Dupré in Paris. He was organist and choirmaster at St. Thomas’s Chapel in N.Y. (1930–35) and at St. Mark’s Chapel in Grand Rapids (1935–39); then was organist and music director of the Cathedral Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Washington, D.C. (1939–42; 1946–77). He also was music director of the Opera Soc. of Washington, D.C. (1956–57) and of the Lake George Opera Festival in Glens Falls, N.Y. (1967–77).
