Cambreling, Sylvain
Cambreling, Sylvain, French conductor; b. Amiens, July 2, 1948. He received training in music at the Paris Cons. In 1975 he became asst. conductor of the Orchestre de Lyon, and also conducted opera in Lyon. Beginning with the 1979–80 season, he appeared regularly as a conductor at the Paris Opéra. In 1981 he became joint music director (with John Pritchard) of the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels. He also conducted at the Glyndebourne Festival, the Frankfurt am Main Opera, La Scala in Milan, in the U.S., and in Canada. On Jan. 9, 1986, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. conducting Roméo et Juliette. From 1993 to 1997 he was chief conductor of the Frankfurt am Main Opera. He became chief conductor of the SWR (South West Radio) Sym. Orch. of Baden–Baden and Freiburg im Breisgau in 1998.
