Pierre Paul Cambon (pyĕr pōl käNbôN´), 1843–1924, French diplomat; brother of Jules Martin Cambon. Named resident minister to Tunis in 1882, he conceived and organized the new Tunisian protectorate under the bey. As ambassador to Great Britain (1898–1920), he helped to create the Entente Cordiale (1904) and the Anglo-Russian agreement of 1907, and he encouraged Great Britain to enter World War I (see Triple Alliance and Triple Entente). He was one of the most able diplomats in French history.
