Cilèa, Francesco
Cilèa, Francesco, Italian composer and pedagogue; b. Palmi, Calabria, July 23, 1866; d. Varazze, Nov. 20, 1950. He studied at the Naples Cons. (1881–89) with Cesi (piano) and Serrao (composition), where he later taught piano (1894–96). He then taught harmony at the Istituto Musicale in Florence (1896–1904). He was head of the Palermo Cons. (1913–16) and of the Cons, di San Pietro a Majella in Naples (1916–35). He was a member of the Reale Accademia Musicale in Florence (1898) and a knight of the Order of the Crown of Italy (1893).
