Crecquillon, Thomas
Crecquillon, Thomas , Franco-Flemish composer; b. c. 1490; d. probably in Bethune, 1557. He was in the chapel of Emperor Charles V in Bethune by 1540, where he later may have been maitre de chapelle. He held benefices in Bethune, Termonde, and Louvain, and was a canon at St. Aubin in Termonde. In 1555 he became a canon in Bethune. Crecquillon composed almost 200 distinguished chansons for four, five, and six Voices. He publ. of vol. of chansons (1544), and many others appeared in collections of his day. He also wrote 12 masses for four, five, and six Voices, over 100 motets, many of which were publ. (two vols., 1559, 1576), and two cycles of Lamentations. Other works were ed. by N.
Bridgman and B. Hudson in the Corpus Mensurabilis Musicae series, LXIII/1 (1974 et seq.).
