Défauw, Désiré (b Ghent, 1885; d Gary, Ind., 1960). Amer. (Belg.-born) violinist and conductor. London début 1910. Formed Allied Str. Qt. (which incl. L. Tertis) 1914–18. Prof. at Brussels Cons. from 1926. Cond. Défauw concerts and Brussels Cons. orch. (1926–40). Est. Orchestre National de Belgique 1937. Went to USA 1938. Cond., Chicago SO 1943–7. Returned to Belgium 1949 but then went back to USA as cond. Gary SO 1950–8.
