Dourlen, Victor(-CharleS-Paul)
Dourlen, Victor(-CharleS-Paul), French pedagogue and composer; b. Dunkerque, Nov. 3, 1780; d. Batignolles, near Paris, Jan. 8, 1864. He studied with Gossec and RA. Boieldieu at the Paris Cons. (1799–1805), sharing the Prix de Rome in 1805 for his cantata Cupidon pleurant Psyché. He subsequently taught there (1812–42). Of his nine operas, eight were produced at the Opéra-Comique: Philodès (Oct. 4,1806), Linnée, ou La Mine de Suéde (Sept. 10,1808), La Dupe de son art (Sept. 9,1809), Cagliostro, ou Les Illuminés (with A. Reicha; Nov. 27, 1810), Plus heureux que sage (May 25, 1816), Le Frère Philippe (Jan. 20,1818), Marini, ou Le Muet de Venise (June 12, 1819), La Vente après décès (Théâtre du GymnaseDramatique; Aug. 1,1821), and Le Petit Souper (Feb. 22, 1822). He also wrote a Piano Concerto, chamber music, and songs. He publ. three harmony textbooks based upon the methods of C.S. Catel
