Ducloux, Walter (Ernest)

Ducloux, Walter (Ernest), Swiss-born American conductor and teacher; b. Kriens, April 17, 1913. He was educated at the Univ. of Munich (Ph.D., 1935) and studied conducting at the Vienna Academy of Music (diploma, 1937). After conducting in Lucerne (1937–39), he emigrated to the U.S. and became a naturalized citizen in 1943. He appeared as a conductor in the U.S. and Europe; also served on the faculties of the Univ. of Southern Calif, in Los Angeles (1953–68) and the Univ. of Tex. in Austin (from 1968). He was music director of the Austin (Tex.) Sym. Orch. (1973–75) and the Austin (Tex.) Lyric Opera (from 1986).
