Eimert, (Eugen Otto) Herbert, German musicologist and composer; b. Bad Kreuznach, April 8, 1897;d. Cologne, Dec. 15, 1972. He took courses with Abendroth, Bolsche, and Othegraven at the Cologne Cons. (1919–24) and studied musicology with Biicken, Kahl, and Kinsky at the Univ. of Cologne (Ph.D., 1931, with the diss. Musikalische Formstrukturen im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert; publ. in Augsburg, 1932). He worked for the Cologne Radio from 1927 until the advent of the Nazis in 1933; after the fall of the Third Reich in 1945, he resumed his activities (until 1965); was founder- director of its electronic music studio (1951–62). He served as a prof, at the Cologne Hochschule für Musik (1965–71). He composed a number of electronic works. His impor.tant writings include Atonale Musiklehre (Leipzig, 1924), Lehrbuch der Zwolftontechnik (Wiesbaden, 1950; 6th ed., 1966), and Grundlagen der musikalischen Reihentechnik (Vienna, 1963). With H. Humpert, he ed. Das Lexikon der elektronischen Musik (Regensburg, 1973).
