Elmo, Cloe
Elmo, Cloe, Italian mezzo-soprano; b. Lecce, April 9, 1910; d. Ankara, May 24, 1962. She was a pupil of Chibaudo at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome; after winning the Vienna singing competition (1932), she pursued training with Rinolfi and Pedrini. In 1934 she made her operatic debut as Santuzza in Cagliara, and then was a valued member of Milan’s La Scala (1936–3). On Nov. 14, 1947, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Azucena, remaining on its roster until 1949. From 1951 to 1954 she again sang at La Scala, and then taught voice at the Ankara Cons. Her repertoire included both standard and contemporary roles in Italian operas.
