Fournier, Pierre-Simon, French cutter and founder of music type; b. Paris, Sept. 15, 1712; d. there, Oct. 8, 1768. Instead of the lozenge- shaped types in the style of Hautin’s (1525), Fournier introduced roundheaded notes, described in his Essai d’un nouveau caractère defonte… (1756). He also publ. a Traité historique sur I’origine et le progrès des camcteres defonte pour I’impression de la musique (Paris, 1765).
