Gardiner, (Henry) Balfour (b London, 1877; d Salisbury, 1950). Eng. composer. Mus. master, Winchester Coll. 1907. Promoted concerts of contemp. Eng. mus. 1910–20, and was especial champion of Holst, for whom he arr. a private f.p. of The Planets in Queen's Hall, London, cond. by Boult in 1918. He also enabled Delius to continue to live in Fr. by buying his house at Grezsur-Loing. Comp. sym., Shepherd Fennel's Dance, orch.
