Ginsburg, Lev (Solomonovich)
Ginsburg, Lev (Solomonovich), Russian cellist, music scholar, and pedagogue; b. Mogilev, Jan. 28, 1907; d. Moscow, Nov. 21, 1981. He studied cello, chamber music, and music history at the Moscow Cons, (graduated, 1931; kandidat degree, 1938, with the diss. Luidzhi Bokkerini i evo rol’ v razvitii violonchel’novo iskusstva [Luigi Boccherini and his role in the development of the art of cello playing]; publ. in Moscow, 1938; Ph.D., 1947, with the diss. VioloncheVnoye iskusstvo ot evo istok ov do kontsa XVIII stoletiya [The art of cello playing from its origin to the end of the XVIII century]). In 1936 he joined the faculty of the Moscow Cons., where he served as a prof, from 1950. He publ. the valuable Istoriya violonchel’novo iskusstva (History of the art of cello playing; vols. I and II, Moscow and Leningrad, 1950, 1957; vol. Ill, Moscow, 1965). His other works included monographs on Casals (Moscow, 1958; 2nd ed., enl., 1966), Ysaye (Moscow, 1959), Rostropovich (Moscow, 1963), and Tartini (Moscow, 1969), and collections of articles and essays.
