Glover, Jane (Alison)

Glover, Jane (Alison), English conductor and musicologist; b. Helmsley, Yorkshire, May 13, 1949. She was educated at St. Hugh’s Coll., Oxford (B.A., M.A.; Ph.D., 1978, with a diss. on Cavalli). She was a junior research fellow (1973-75), lecturer in music (1976-84), and senior research fellow (1982-91) at St. Hugh’s Coll., Oxford. In 1975 she made her professional conducting debut at the Wexford Festival with her own performing ed. of Cavalli’s Eritrea. She was a lecturer in music at St. Anne’s Coll. (1976-80) and at Pembroke Coll. (1979-84) at Oxford, and from 1979 she served on the music faculty at the Univ. of Oxford. From 1982 to 1985 she was music director of the Glyndebourne Touring Opera. In 1983 she became principal conductor of the London Choral Soc. from 1984 to 1991 she was artistic director of the London Mozart Players. In 1988 she made her first appearance at London’s Covent Garden conducting Die Entfiihrung aus dem Serail, and then at the English National Opera in London in 1989 with Don Giovanni. From 1989 to 1996 she was principal conductor of the Huddersfield Choral Soc. In 1995 she conducted Britten’s War Requiem at the London Promenade Concerts. She was engaged to conduct Orfeo at the English National Opera in 1997. As a guest conductor, she appeared with orchs. and opera companies around the world.
