Goode, Daniel (Seinfel)
Goode, Daniel (Seinfel), American clarinetist, composer, teacher, and writer on music; b. N.Y, Jan. 24, 1936. After studies in philosophy at Oberlin Coll. in Ohio (B.A., 1957), he studied with Cowell and Luening at Columbia Univ. in N.Y. (M.A., 1962) and with Gaburo and Oliveros at the Univ. of Calif, at San Diego (1968-70). In 1983 he co-founded the DownTown Ensemble in N.Y; also was a founding member of Gamelan Son of Lion. In 1971 he became an asst. prof, at Livingston Coll., Rutgers Univ.; in 1981, became a prof at its Mason Gross School of the Arts. As a composer, Goode combines the techniques of process music with improvisation. His Clarinet Songs (1979-91), an evening-length suite comprised of 16 independent settings, explores non-traditional notations, circular breathing, and alternate, microtonal fingerings, all of which con-spire to produce unusual, often striking timbres. A collection of his writings was publ. as From Notebooks 1968- (Lebanon, N.H., 1984).
