Grand]any, Marcel (Georges Lucien)
Grand]any, Marcel (Georges Lucien), distinguished French-born American harpist, pedagogue, and composer; b. Paris, Sept. 3, 1891; d. N.Y., Feb. 24, 1975. He was a student of Henriette Renié, taking the premier prix at the Paris Cons, in 1905. At age 17, he made his formal debut as soloist with the Lamoureux Orch. in Paris. In 1922 he made his first appearance in London and in 1924 made his debut in N.Y. From 1921 to 1935 he taught at the Fontainebleau Cons. In 1936 he settled in N.Y. and in 1945 became a naturalized American citizen. He taught at the Juilliard School of Music in N.Y. (1938-75), and also at the Montreal Cons. (1943-63). Among his works were a Poème symphonique for Harp, Horn, and Orch., other harp pieces, and songs. He publ. First Grade Harp Pieces (N.Y, 1964).
