Gruberová, Edita, Czech soprano; b. Bratislava, Dec. 23, 1946. She was a student in Prague of Maria Medvecka and in Vienna of Ruthilde Boesch. In 1968 she made her operatic debut as Rossini’s Rosina at the Slovak National Theater in Bratislava. In 1970 she made her first appearance at the Vienna State Opera as the Queen of the Night, and subsequently sang there regularly. In 1973 she sang at the Glyndebourne Festival and in 1974 at the Salzburg Festival. On Jan. 5, 1977, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as the Queen of the Night. She appeared as Giulietta in I Capuleti e i Montecchi at London’s Covent Garden in 1984. After singing Lucia at Milan’s La Scala in 1984, she reprised that role in Chicago in 1986 and in Barcelona in 1987. In 1989 she portrayed Violetta at the Metropolitan Opera. She sang Donizetti’s Elizabeth I in Vienna in 1990, and then appeared as Semiramide in Zurich in 1992. She returned to Vienna as Linda di Chamounix in 1997 and also sang Anna Bolena that year in Munich. She also toured widely as a concert singer. Among her other admired roles were Donna Anna, Gilda, and Ariadne.
