Hanuszewska-Schaeffer, Mieczyslawa Janina
Hanuszewska-Schaeffer, Mieczyslawa Janina, Polish writer on music; b. Borszów, Oct. 1, 1929. She studied musicology with Jachimecki at the Jagiello Univ. in Kraków (1948–52). In 1963 she joined the staff of Kraków’s Zycie Literackie, producing a weekly chronicle on the world’s music. She has written extensively on modern music, including detailed studies on Ives, Messiaen, and the early works of Boulez. She was a contributor to Wielka Encyklopedia Muzyczna and The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (1980). With her husband, Bogustaw Schaeffer , she ed. Almanack wspólszesnych kompozytorów polskich (Almanac of Modern Polish Composers; Kraków, 1966; new ed., 1989). She also ed. 1000 kompozytorów (1, 000 Composers; 5th ed., Kraków, 1986).
