Hayman, Richard, American composer; b. Sandia, N. Mex., July 29, 1951. He studied humanities and philosophy at Columbia Univ., where he attended Us-sachevsky’s classes in electronic music; he also studied flute with Eleanor Laurence at the Manhattan School of Music, Indian vocal music with Ravi Shankar, and conducting with Boulez at the Juilliard School of Music. He then descended into the avant-garde maelstrom and produced a series of “works” ranging from graffiti exhibitions to Dali for Orch. (1974), notated on a toothpick, with instructions to “ascend chromatically in slow pulse.”
