Heiniö, Mikko
Heiniö, Mikko, Finnish composer and musicologist; b. Tampere, May 5, 1948. He was a student in piano of Liisa Pohjola and in composition of Kokkonen at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki (1971-75; composition diploma, 1977). He also studied composition with Szalonek on a Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst scholarship in Berlin (1975–77). From 1977 to 1985 he taught at the Univ. of Helsinki, where he took his Ph.D. in musicology in 1984 with a diss. on the idea of innovation and tradition in the musical philosophy of contemporary Finnish composers. In 1986 he became prof, of musicology at the Univ. of Turku. He publ, several monographs and journal articles on various aspects of contemporary Finnish music. In his compositions, he is a modernist who draws upon the varied resources offered by serialism, aleatory, minimalism, and the popular genres.
