Herbig, Günther
Herbig, Günther, German conductor; b. Ústí-nad-Labem, Czechoslovakia, Nov. 30, 1931. He studied conducting with Abendroth at the Weimar Hochschule für Musik, and received further training from Scherchen, Yansons, and Karajan. He was conductor of the German National Theater in Weimar (1957–62), music director of the Hans Otto Theater in Potsdam (1962–66), and conductor of the (East) Berlin Sym. Orch. (1966–72). He was Generalmusikdirektor (1970–72) and chief conductor (1972–77) of the Dresden Phil., and then was chief conductor of the (East) Berlin Sym. Orch. (1977–83), and principal guest conductor of the Dallas Sym. Orch. (1979–81) and BBC Northern Sym. Orch. in Manchester (1981–83). From 1984 to 1990 he was music director of the Detroit Sym. Orch., and from 1990 to 1994 of the Toronto Sym.
