Hillier, Paul (Douglas)
Hillier, Paul (Douglas), distinguished English baritone, conductor, and teacher; b. Dorchester, Feb. 9, 1949. He trained at the Guildhall School of Music in London, and then served as vicar-choral at St. Paul’s Cathedral (1973-74). In 1974 he made his formal concert debut at London’s Purcell Room and also founded the Hilliard Ensemble, which he directed in performances of early music until 1990. In 1989 he founded the Theatre of Voices. He also was a prof. of music at the Univ. of Calif. at Davis from 1990. In 1996 he became a prof, and director of the Early Music Inst. at the Ind. Univ. School of Music. He publ. 300 Years of English Partsongs (1983), Romantic English Partsongs (1986), and The Catch Book (1987).
