Hurford, Peter (John)

Hurford, Peter (John), noted English organist; b. Minehead, Somerset, Nov. 22, 1930. He studied law and music at Jesus Coll., Cambridge; later took organ lessons with Marchai in Paris. In 1958 he was named Master of the Music at St. Albans Abbey; in 1963 he founded the International Organ Festival there. He left St. Albans in 1979 to pursue his international career as a leading interpreter of the music of the Baroque period. He publ, the study Making Music on the Organ (Oxford, 1988; rev. ed., 1990). In 1984 he was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire.
