Janowski, Marek, Polish-born German conductor; b. Warsaw, Feb. 18, 1939. He was taken to Germany while young, where he studied mathematics and music at the Univ. of Cologne. He continued his musical studies in Vienna and at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena. He conducted sym. concerts in Italy, and then opera in Aachen and Cologne. Janowski subsequently held the post of first conductor at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf (1964–69) and at the Hamburg State Opera (1969–74), and also made guest appearances in Stuttgart, Cologne, and Munich. In 1969 he made his English debut conducting the visiting Cologne Opera in the British premiere of Henze’s Der junge Lord.From 1973 to 1975 he was chief conductor in Freiburg im Breisgau, and from 1975 to 1979 Generalmusikdirektor in Dortmund. He made his U.S. debut conducting Lohengrin at the Chicago Lyric Opera in 1980. He was principal guest conductor (1980–83) and artistic advisor (1983–86) of the Royal Liverpool Phil, and was also chief conductor of the Nouvel Orch. Philharmonique de Radio France in Paris (from 1984) and of the Gürzenich Orch. in Cologne (1986–91). In 1999 he became artistic director of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo.—
