Joachim, Amalie (née Schneeweiss)

Joachim, Amalie (née Schneeweiss), German soprano, later mezzo-soprano; b. Marburg, May 10, 1839; d. Berlin, Feb. 3, 1899. She began her career as a soprano, appearing in Vienna under the name Weiss (1854), and later became a mezzo-soprano. She married Joseph Joachim in 1863, but after a bitter lawsuit, in which he accused her of infidelity with the publisher Fritz Simrock, they were divorced (1884). She was a fine lieder artist, excelling particularly in songs by Schumann.
