Jonsson, Josef Petrus
Jonsson, Josef Petrus, Swedish composer, music critic, and teacher; b. Enköping, June 21, 1887; d. Nor-rköping, May 9, 1969. He studied piano, and later received instruction in orchestration from Ivar Hellman in Norrköping. From 1922 to 1966 he was music critic of the newspaper Östergötlands Folkblad. His works reveal a fine command of classical forms in a late Romantic style. He wrote three syms. (Nordland, 1919-22; 1931; 1947), Chamber Symphony (1949), several orch. overtures and suites, Violin Concerto (Norrköping, April 10, 1960), Festival Prelude for Orch. (1961), Korallrevet, symphonic poem for Baritone, Chorus, and Orch. (1916), Missa solemnis for Chorus, Orch., and Organ (1934), Cantata for Speaking Chorus, Women’s Chorus, Soloists, 2 Flutes, and Piano (Norrköping, May 5, 1962), chamber music, piano pieces, and songs.
