Jung, Manfred
Jung, Manfred, German tenor; b. Oberhausen, July 9, 1945. He studied with Hilde Wesselmann at the Essen Folkwangschule. After singing in the Bayreuth Festival chorus (1970–73), he made his operatic debut in Dortmund in 1974, and then sang in Kaiserslautern, Saarbrücken, and Karlsruhe. In 1977 he became a member of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf; made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival as Siegfried in Götterdämmerung (1977), and then appeared in the televised version of that role in the Ring cycle. He made his Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. in the title role of Siegfried on Sept. 24, 1981, and subsequently sang other Wagnerian roles there. He returned to the Bayreuth Festival in 1983 to sing Siegfried in the Solti-Hall production, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Wagner’s death; also appeared in concert throughout Europe, North America, and the Far East.
