Kade, Otto

Kade, Otto, eminent German music scholar; b. Dresden, May 6, 1819; d. Bad Doberan, near Rostock, July 19, 1900. He studied at the Dresden Kreuzschule, then took courses with Julius Otto and Moritz Hauptmann (harmony and counterpoint) and Johann Schneider (piano and organ); also studied choral conducting. In 1848 he founded in Dresden the Cecilian Soc. for the promotion of early sacred music. In 1860 he became music director of the court of the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin; also taught at the Gymnasium there (1866–93). His important writings include Der neu aufgefundene Luthercodez vom Jahre 1530 (Dresden, 1871), Die älteren Musikalien der Stadt Freiberg in Sachsen (Leipzig, 1888), and Die Musikalien-Sammlung des grossherzoglich Mecklenburg-Schweriner Füstenhauses aus den letzten zwei Jahrhunderten (2 vols., Schwerin, 1893; suppl., Der Musikalische Nachlass der Frau Erbgrossherzogin Auguste von Mecklenburg-Schwerin, 1899). He also ed. the collections Cantionale für die evangelisch-lutherischen Kirchen im Grossherzogtum Mecklenburg-Schwerin (Schwerin, 1868-87) and Vierstimmiges Choralbuch…zu dem-…Mecklenburgischen Gesangbuch (Schwerin, 1869).
