Kahl, Willi, German musicologist; b. Zabern, Alsace, July 18, 1893; d. Cologne, Oct. 3, 1962. He first studied in Freiburg im Breisgau and Munich, and then received his Ph.D. in 1919 from the Univ. of Bonn with the diss. Das lyrische Klavierstück zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts (1800 bis 1830) und seine Vorgeschichte im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert’, subsequently completed his Habilitation in 1923 at the Univ. of Cologne with his Studien zur Geschichte der Klaviermusik des 18. Jahrhunderts. In 1928 he became Bibliotheksrat of the Univ. of Cologne and of the city library; was also a reader at the Univ. from 1928; he retired in 1958. His writings include Musik und Musikleben im Rheinland (Cologne, 1923), Herbart als Musiker (Langensalza, 1936), and Verzeichnis des Schrifttums über Franz Schubert, 1828-1928 (Regensburg, 1938). He also ed. various works and compiled the important documentary vol. Selbstbiographien deutscher Musiker des XVIII. Jahrhunderts (Cologne, 1948).
