Kaul, Oskar

Kaul, Oskar, German musicologist; b. Heufeld, Oct. 11, 1885; d. Unterwössen, July 17, 1968. He studied at the Cologne Cons. (1905–08), then took courses in musicology with Sandberger and Kroyer at the Univ. of Munich (Ph.D., 1911, with the diss. Anton Rosetti: Sein Leben und seine Werke). He joined the faculty of the Würzburg Cons. (1913); was its deputy director (1924–45); was also a Privatdozent (1922–28) and reader (1928–45) at the Univ. of Würzburg. He ed. 5 syms. and chamber music of Rosetti for the Denkmäler der Tonkunst in Bayern, XXII, Jg. XII/1 (1912; 2nd ed., rev., 1968) and XXXIII, Jg. XXV (1925). His writings include Die Vokalwerke Anton Rosettis (Cologne, 1911), Geschichte der Würzburger Hofmusik im 18. Jahrhundert (Würzburg, 1924), and Zur Musikgeschichte der ehemaligen Reichsstadt Schweinfurt (Würzburg, 1935).
