Kim, Young-Uck
Kim, Young-Uck, outstanding South Korean violinist; b. Seoul, Sept. 1, 1947. He began piano studies at 5 but turned to the violin at 6. While still a child, he performed with the Seoul Sym. Orch. At 11, he was sent to the U.S., where he continued his studies with Galamian at the Curtis Inst, of Music in Philadelphia; he also attended the Marlboro (Vt.) Music School. After making an auspicious appearance with Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orch. in a nationally televised concert on May 10, 1963, he toured with them in South America. In subsequent years, he appeared as a soloist with many of the principal North American, European, and Far Eastern orchs. On Feb. 13, 1976, he made his N.Y. recital debut at Alice Tully Hall. From 1979 he toured extensively in a trio with Emanuel Ax and Yo-Yo Ma. In addition to the standard repertoire, Kim has applied his brilliant virtuoso technique and interpretive insights to many contemporary works.
