Kuckertz, Josef, German ethnomusicologist; b. Würseln, near Aachen, Nov. 24, 1930. After initial schooling at the Rheinische Musikschule in Cologne, he studied musicology with Marius Schneider at the Univ. of Cologne (Ph.D., 1962, with the diss. Gestaltvariation in den von Bartok gesammelten rumänischen Colinden). He then taught at the Univ. of Cologne, completing his Habilitation with a study of South Indian music (1967). His research focuses on the music and theory of the more developed oriental cultures and the relationship between oriental and European music, with particular emphasis on South India.
