Kupper, Annelies (Gabriele)
Kupper, Annelies (Gabriele), German soprano; b. Glatz, July 21, 1906; d. Haar, near Munich, Dec. 8, 1987. She studied at the Univ. of Breslau, and then taught in that city (1929–35). She made her debut at the Breslau Opera (1935), remaining there until 1937. She then sang in Schwerin (1937–38) and Weimar (1938–39). She was a principal member of the Hamburg State Opera (1940–46) and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich (1946–61); also sang at Bayreuth, Salzburg, and London’s Covent Garden (Chrysothemis, 1953) and appeared as Danae in the first public performance of Richard Strauss’s Die Liebe der Danae (Salzburg, 1952). She became a teacher at the Munich Academy of Music (1956). In addition to her Mozart and Strauss roles, she became known for her performances of works by contemporary German composers.
