Laburda, Jiří

Laburda, Jiří, Czech composer; b. Soběslav, April 3, 1931.He received private training in composition from Karel Hába and Zdeněk Hůla and in musicology from Eduard Herzog, and took courses in music education and philology at the Charles Univ. in Prague (1952–55). After studies at the Prague Teacher Training Coll. (1957–61), he returned to the Charles Univ., where he took his Ph.D. (1970, with a diss. on Shostakovich’s syms.) and subsequently served on its faculty. His works follow along traditional paths with infusions of aleatory and dodecaphonic writing; his vocal and chamber pieces are particularly effective.
