Leighton, Sir William, English poet and composer; b. probably in Plash, Shropshire, c. 1565; d. London (buried), July 31, 1622. He publ. The Teares or Lamentations of a Sorrowfull Soule Composed with Musicali Ayres and Songs both for Voyces and Divers Instruments (1613), containing 18 consort songs for 4 Voices (the first 8 are by Leighton), 12 unaccompanied songs for 4 Voices, and 25 unaccompanied songs for 5 Voices.
