Loder, George

Loder, George, English double bass player, conductor, and composer, cousin of Edward (James) Loder; b. Bath, c. 1816; d. Adelaide, July 15, 1868. He went to the U.S. in 1836, and in 1839–40 was active as a conductor and composer in N.Y. In 1842 he helped to organize the N.Y. Phil. Sym. Soc., playing double bass with it until 1847. He conducted it in the U.S. premiere of Beethoven’s 9th Sym. on May 20, 1846, and returned as an occasional conductor with it until 1853. From 1844 he also served as the principal of the N.Y. Vocal Inst. In 1856 Loder settled in Australia as an opera conductor. He composed the comic operettas Pets of the Parterre and The Old House at Home.He also publ. The New York Glee Book (1843; includes many of his own part songs) and The Philadelphia and New York Glee Book (1857).
