Maasalo, Armas (Toivo Valdemar)

Maasalo, Armas (Toivo Valdemar), Finnish composer and teacher; b. Rautavaara, Aug. 28, 1885; d. Helsinki, Sept. 9, 1960. He studied at the Helsinki Music Inst. (1907–10). He taught at the Helsinki Church Music Inst. (1914–51), serving as its director (1923–51). He then was director of the church music dept. of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki (1951–55). Maasalo wrote much sacred music.

(1945). vocal:The Path of Man, cantata (1926); 2 Stars for Alto, Chorus, and Orch. (1929); Christmas Oratorio (1945); religious songs for chorus and solo voice.
