Maggini, Gio(vanni) Paolo
Maggini, Gio(vanni) Paolo, important Italian instrument maker; b. Brescia (baptized), Nov. 29, 1579; d. there, c. 1630. He worked in the shop of Gasparo da Salo. After his marriage in 1615, he set up his own workshop and became prosperous, thanks to the excellence of his manufacture. His instruments are highly prized; among his extant instruments are violins, violas, cellos, basses, various examples of the viol family, and citterns. His label reads: Gio. Paolo Maggini, Brescia.
