McGegan, Nicholas

McGegan, Nicholas, English keyboard player, flutist, and conductor; b. Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, Jan. 14, 1950. He studied piano at London’s Trinity Coll. of Music (1968) and also learned to play the flute, specializing in the Baroque flute; pursued his education at Corpus Christi Coll., Cambridge (B.A., 1972), and at Magdalen Coll., Oxford (M.A., 1976). He was active as a flutist, harpsichordist, fortepianist, and pianist in London, where he was also a prof, of Baroque flute (1973–79) and music history (1975–79) and director of early music (1976–80) at the Royal Coll. of Music. From 1979 to 1984 he was artist-in-residence at Washington Univ. in St. Louis; then became music director of the Philharmonia Baroque Orch. in San Francisco (1985), the Ojai (Calif.) Festival (1988), and the Göttingen Handel Festival (1991). From 1993 to 1995 he was principal conductor of the Drottningholm Court Theater in Stockholm. He also appeared widely in Europe and North America as a guest conductor.
