Meier, Jost
Meier, Jost, Swiss composer and conductor; b. Solothurn, March 15, 1939. He studied cello, conducting, and composition at the Bern Cons., and completed his training in composition with Frank Martin in the Netherlands. From 1969 to 1979 he was chief conductor of the Biel Orch. and Theater. After conducting in Basel (1980–83), he was active as a guest conductor throughout Europe. He also taught at the Basel Academy of Music and the Zürich Cons. His compositions follow the precepts of the second Viennese school. Among his works are the operas Sennetuntschi (Freiburg, April 23, 1983), Der Drache (Basel, May 24, 1985), Der Zoobär (Zürich, June 11, 1987), Augustin (Basel, April 21, 1988), and Dreyfus—Die Affäre (Berlin, May 8, 1994).
