Meyer, Ernest (Hermann)
Meyer, Ernest (Hermann) (b Berlin, 1905; d Berlin, 1988). Ger. musicologist and composer. After meeting Eisler in 1929, joined Ger. Communist party and cond. workers’ choruses. With advent of Nazis, fled to London where he was helped by Alan Bush and cond. Labour Choral Union. In 1948 went to E. Berlin as prof. and dir. of musicological inst. of Humboldt Univ. until 1970. Wrote book on Eng. chamber mus. from Middle Ages to Purcell (1946, rev. 1982). Comps. incl. opera Reiter der Nacht (1969–72); sym. for pf. and orch.; vn. conc.; hp. conc.; va. conc.; sym.; 6 str. qts.; pf. trio; choral works; and over 200 mass songs.
