Minoja, Ambrogio

Minoja, Ambrogio, Italian composer and singing teacher; b. Ospitaletto Lodigiano, near Piacenza, Oct. 22, 1752; d. Milan, Aug. 3, 1825. He studied music in Lodi and Naples, and then served as maestro al cembalo at La Scala in Milan and at the Teatro Canobbiano there from 1780 to 1802. In 1814 he became censor of the Milan Cons., holding that position until his death. As an instructor of high repute, he publ. books of solfeggi and Lettere sopra il canto (Milan, 1812). He composed the operas Tito nelle Gallie (La Scala, Milan, Dec. 26, 1786) and Olimpiade (Rome, Dec. 26, 1787) as well as several syms., sacred music, and chamber pieces.
