Mirzoyan, Edvard (Mikaeli)
Mirzoyan, Edvard (Mikaeli), Armenian composer and pedagogue; b. Gori, Ga., May 12, 1921. He studied in Yerevan at the Music School (1928–36) and with Talyan at the Cons. (1936–41) before completing his training with Litinsky and Peyko at the House of Armenian Culture in Moscow (1946–48). Returning to Yerevan, he was a teacher (1948–65) and a prof. (from 1965) at the Cons., where he served as head of the composition dept. (1972–87). In 1981 he was made a People’s Artist of the U.S.S.R. His music followed in a lucid neo-Classical style, while his thematic materials were of Armenian provenance.
