Münchinger, Karl
Münchinger, Karl, German conductor; b. Stuttgart, May 29, 1915; d. there, March 13, 1990. He studied at the Hochschule für Musik in Stuttgart; then with Abendroth at the Leipzig Cons. From 1941 to 1943 he was 1st conductor of the orch. in Hannover, and in 1945 founded the Stuttgart Chamber Orch. He toured America, Japan, and Russia; made his U.S. debut in San Francisco in 1953, and during the following season made a U.S. tour with his Stuttgart Chamber Orch.; he visited the U.S. again in 1977. In 1966 he organized the “Klassische Philharmonie” in Stuttgart, with which he gave regular performances. He retired in 1988.
