Murphy, Suzanne

Murphy, Suzanne, Irish soprano; b. Limerick, Aug. 15, 1941. She received vocal training from Veronica Dunne at the Dublin Coll. of Music (1973–76). After making her operatic debut in La Cenerentola at the Irish National Opera in Dublin, she was engaged as Constanze at the Welsh National Opera in Cardiff in 1976. She subsequently sang such roles there as Gilda, Norma, Leonora, Elisabeth de Valois, Violetta, Amelia Boccanegra, and Musetta. In 1985 she sang Norma in Munich. In 1987 she made her first appearance at the Vienna State Opera as Elettra. She sang Alice Ford during the Welsh National Opera’s tour to N.Y. and Milan in 1989. In 1991 she portrayed Elettra at the London Promenade Concerts, and in 1992 she appeared as Tosca with the English National Opera in London. She was engaged as Leonore in Belfast in 1996.
