National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. Sym. orch. for children aged between 13 and 19 founded in 1947 by Ruth Railton (later Dame Ruth King). Assembled in Bath 1947 under conductorship of Reginald Jacques. Players selected by audition, the orch. assembling in school holidays for rehearsal and study under guest cond. Very high standard achieved and many players have ‘graduated’ into leading sym. orchs.
