Nees, Staf (Gustaaf Frans)
Nees, Staf (Gustaaf Frans), Belgian carilloneur, teacher, and composer; b. Mechelen, Dec. 2, 1901; d. there, Jan. 2, 1965. He was a pupil of Van Nuffel, Mortelmans, and Depuydt at the Lemmens Inst. (1916–22) and of Denijn at the Carillonneurs’s school (1922–24) in Mechelen. He taught at the Lemmens Inst. (1924–44), and then was director of the Carillonneurs’s school (from 1944). From 1932 he also served as town carilloneur in Mecheln. Nees toured extensively throughout Europe and North America, and also gave master classes. In addition to music for the carillon, he composed choral works.
