Noren, Heinrich (real name, Heinrich Suso Johannes Gottlieb; in 1916 he added his wife’s name, Noren, to his own), Austrian violinist and composer; b. Graz, Jan. 5, 1861; d. Rottach, Bavaria, June 6, 1928. He studied violin with Vieuxtemps in Brussels (1878) and with Massart in Paris (1883), and composition with Gernsheim and Bussler in Berlin. In 1895 he settled in Krefeld, where he founded his own music school. He then taught at the Stern Cons, in Berlin (1901–07). In 1915 he moved to Rottach. His name attracted attention with the performance of his orch. variations, Kaleidoskop (Dresden, July 1, 1907), in which the last movement, dedicated to “a famous contemporary” was a variation on a theme from Ein Heldenleben by Richard Strauss. The publishers of Strauss instituted a lawsuit against Noren, which created a ripple of excitement in musical circles. Noren also composed an opera, Der Schleier der Beatrice, Sym., Violin Concerto, and some chamber music.
