Patorzhinsky, Ivan (Sergeievich)
Patorzhinsky, Ivan (Sergeievich), noted Ukrainian bass; b. Petrovo-Svistunovo, March 3,1896; d. Kiev, Feb. 22, 1960. He studied at the Ekaterinoslav Cons., graduating in 1922. From 1925 to 1935 he was a member of the Kharkov Opera, and from 1935 to 1960 of the Kiev Opera. He also pursued a concert career. From 1946 he taught at the Kiev Cons. In 1944 he was made a People’s Artist of the U.S.S.R. Patorzhinsky was the leading Ukrainian bass of his day, excelling particularly in roles in Ukrainian operas. He also was a fine Don Basilio, Boris Godunov, and Méphistophélès.
