Platania, Pietro

Platania, Pietro , Italian composer; b. Catania, April 5, 1828; d. Naples, April 26, 1907. He studied with P. Raimondi at the Naples Cons. He was director of the Palermo Cons. (1863–82), and later maestro di cappella at Milan (from 1882), and also director of the Naples Cons. (1885–1902). Rossini and Verdi considered him an excellent contrapuntist.
